A Beautiful Book!

I usually hold my praise until I take and pass an exam but I'll make exception for this awesome book. Most CCNP books seem very disjointed and filled with numerous technical and egregious editing errors. Simply put they don't make a lot of sense because they seem like a collection of cut-n-paste from other techinical documents. If you were trying to learn and understand various switching technologies including LANE, STP, VTP, VLAN or etc.... i can truly say that this book is the best. It explains with authority, clearity, and humour. After you read this book, you'll feel like your time reading it was well spent because you will understand reasons and whys. Its just a beautiful book. Thanks to authors.

Title: Oracle High-Performance SQL Tuning
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media

no detail and some mistake

After having tuned our server, network, and database it was clear that the remaining slow performance was due to the SQL.This led me to the purchase of this book which has not disapointed. This book goes into great detail about how sql statements effect database performance and how to correct it.After just the first few chapters, I was able to quickly find 'hot' sql statements and see how they were causing bad performance due to full table scans, merge joins, slow index scans, hints, built in functions, sorting etc. This book gives a good explanation to the various table / index access methods and thus improved my ability to look at an explain plan and quickly see problem areas. With this book I have better understanding of the options to correct them without messing with the sql code. Infact, most all of these are correctable without changing the sql code - my favorite part. There is of course a lot written on tuning to the code that can make great strides in performance as well, but as a dba and not a developer, I was more focused on things I could do to improve performance without changing the code.
The scrips with the book are especially good - pull sql out of the library cache on the fly, or out of statspack tables for hisorical analysis - and get reports on full table scans, various index scan reports, etc. These alone make the usefulness of this book fast and easy - worth it.
In short, I recomend this book to anyone wanting a better understanding of how sql code is affecting your DB performance as well as options to correct it. This is good if you have applications where you can't change the code (or just don't want to) but see improvements in performance need be made.

Title: Learning Web Design, 2nd Edition
Publisher: O'Reilly

Begin your web design career here!

This book starts with the premise that you have no web development experience and you do not want to program. The book is divided into four parts that cover an overview of web development, an html tutorial, graphics for the web, and web site design. Within each section, a different subject is addressed in every chapter. While each chapter starts at a very basic level, enough material is taught to give the reader a good start in each of the subjects. I particularly liked the way style sheets and links were covered. The book is replete with tips, illustrations, and code examples to assist the reader. There are exercises to reinforce the information for most of the topics covered.
The format of the book is different than most of the O'Reilly books that I have read in the past. The larger format of the book with the better paper and more graphics add to the learning experience especially with this subject. This was a fun book to read, even though I was familiar with most of the material. I was mainly interested in the graphics section and web design. Apparently, my interests coincided with those of the author's because I feel that those sections are the strongest in the book.
My only slight criticism of this book might be that while the reader is probably a beginner, most of the graphics examples are done with Photoshop or Fireworks. These tools may be a bit out of budget for the fledgling web designer. This book is a good starting point, but the reader probably will need to follow it with something more substantial.

this is an example how a mcse book should be written

I have taken, and passed, this 70-299 exam just reading _deeply_ this text and the recommended free on-line resources associated with it. It means it is very well written, since l haven't taken other ms win 2003 exams. I would say a must for people interested in securing ms enviroments and for professionals that want to understand what are they doing. I have also read other mcse books, like 70-270 and win2k one's, no one can be compared with this one, no one was useful for the certification like this one has been.
