Another Well Deserved 5 Stars!!!

Why am I giving this book 5 stars like the rest of reviewers? Just to conform? Of course!! Ah...but I don't mean with the star rating thing, but with the uniformity of praises. I'm totally new to anything that starts with the word, Photoshop... All I wanted was someone to guide me through the program in step-by-step, no nonsense fashion, and Jan did a superb job of systematically fulfilling my very need. No more frustration!!

Although I'm totally new and uninitiated, I had no problem whatsover going through Jan's Confidence Builder. So I slightly disagree with another reviewer who thought the Confidence Builder wasn't for a beginner. But I do very much agree with another reviewer who stated that this book is far better than Kelby's. My first book on PSE was by Kelby's, but after having had enough of frustration trying to figure out "in-between-the-steps" with Kelby's style of instruction (when you're frustrated, none of his incessant attempts at humor helps!), I purchased Jan's delightful book. With each of her tutorial segments, my knowledge of PSE grows and builds. For the first time I feel like I know what PSE is like and what I can do with it. Yet I've only touched on the surface!! So let me get back to the tutorial...

I want you to pass

I took the hardware portion of the A+ certifcation test just a few days ago and passed. It wasnt by a big margin, but nevertheless I want you to pass so I'm writing this. I think this is a good book. One reason I bought it was because it was recently published(2004), however it's now 2005. I think they still use the 2003 objectives. One thing I like is that this book repeats concepts throughout several chapters. The practice test questions on the CDROM (PrepLogic)were good help to. I made sure I went through all of them. When you buy the book you get a discount on test vouchers when you purchace them through Marcraft (sp). Marcraft also sends you their own practice CD test questions which helps even though they are very similar to the ones on the PrepLogic CD which comes with the book. I have had some expericene with computers, but I really havent had on the job experience so thats why I wanted to get certified. The book goes into depth on a lot of stuff that I proabably have forgotton by now. There are a couple of test questions on the test that I dont recall seeing anywhere in the book. If you really buckle down you can pass. I guess like everyone else I would reccommend another book, although I just used the book and 2 practice cd tests.

Yes! A tech teacher who can teach!

Thank you, John Kauffman! Finally -- a tech book written by someone who understands and respects the learning process and therefore the student's time -- instead of that tired, arrogant ode to "How cryptic can I be while showing how smart I am?" This book is a steal -- from the lucid writing to the clean layout to the painstaking editing -- worth every penny and then some. The "how it works" explanations are priceless; and the Common Errors alerts and Summary sections save tons of time. Very practical, very Real World, very refreshing.
