Peerless tools for writing code now!

Let me just say that I've never been disappointed by an O'Reilly Cookbook. They are always incredibly useful. They don't start from square one, but if you're still learning the language, they're great. This book is no exception. Rather, it's probably the best one I've read yet. It really fills in the missing parts of the language, in fact. If you want a method to submit an entire form to a CGI script, they've got one. The book is full of useful things like that.
My only complain about the book, and this is a minor one, is that the code for the sample applications in the last few chapters doesn't seem to function at all on my Mac - none of them. This is a little bit of a bummer, as I was looking forward to examining the apps as they functioned. But the wealth of practical knowledge that fills the rest of the book leaves me with no option but to give it five stars. If all that code functioned perfectly... I'd have to find a way to give it six.

Should be mandatory reading

I've been working in the software industry for 12 years now. I believe that a lot of bad practices have been creeping into programming. A lot of code is poorly written, full of "quick and dirty" fixes, poorly structured, and hard to comprehend. The IT industry is not as rigorous as it once was.
This is what Code Complete addresses. It is not a programming primer, it is an discussion of methods that can be used to make code more legible, more maintainable, and less buggy.
If you don't or can't buy the book then absorb this idea from the book: Programming is not the art of communicating with the computer, it is the art of communicating with other programmers who will read your code.

Excellent Book

This book is simply excellent , it covers so many many things(over 1000 pages!!!). One of the best things is the new quick start chapter wich lets u start using lightwave immediatley without having to read so many pages telling u this tool is so and so and keep wondering what would be the benefit of that ...
Also the book covers diff tech of modelling (box, spline, point by point)and so many other things (lights, texturing, animation)and if u still don't find that to be enough u r also supplied with a DVD that includes 5 hours of video tutorials...
